Math: Differences to 10
For today’s lesson the kids will be working on equations within 10 by using the book, Elevator Magic by Stuart Murphy. We will use the vertical number line we used yesterday as it will directly resemble the elevator display from the story.
There are 10 floors and we are going down 2. What is 10 take away 2?
We are on the 8th floor and are going down 3 floors. What is 8 take away 3?
After the read aloud, each pair will have an elevator card, whiteboard and dry-erase marker. I will lead the kids in problems like these and they will record the equation on their whiteboard.
We are on the 9
th floor and are going down 3 floors. What floor will be on? The kids will write 9-3=6
We on the 10th floor and going down 7 floors. The kids will write 10-7=3 and so on...

Math: Subtracting One

Today, the kids will focus on subtracting one with the use of a vertical number line.
Using the Ten in a Bed poem, the kids will raise 10 fingers and subtract one-by-one to notice that the number is getting less by one each time. My goal is to have the kids continue to notice the connection between less and subtraction. We will continue to use the vertical number line to demonstrate a subtraction problem like this:
5 birds were in a tree. 3 birds flew away. How many birds are left? We will find the number 5 and swoop down 3 spots to see there are 2 birds left.

Math: Unknown Subtraction Stories
We will work on the difference in unknown problems. The kids will show the problem using cubes and write the problem statement. The following is an example of the problems they will work on.
My teacher has 10 flowers and my principal has 7 flowers. How many fewer flowers does my principal have than my teacher?
It's important the kids are confident in stating how many fewer there are. This can be very difficult for the kids as they are most confident with more.

We will focus these vocabulary words within the story (weather, crystal, electricity, funnel) and answer these questions:
1) Who is the author? What is their job compared to the illustrator?
2) What is one fact we heard from the book?

Math: Subtraction Stories: Day 2
We will work on more subtraction stories within 10 today. Yesterday, the kids used a farm scene to lay the cubes on. Today, they have a pond scene to lay their 'frogs' on.

Science: Thunderstorm in a Cup
The kids will love this experiment!
Fill the cup half full of water to represent the sky then add shaving cream on the water for clouds. Next, add a few drops of blue food coloring onto the top of the cloud to represent water droplets. As a cloud gets full and heavy the water starts to fall from the sky as rain. I'll simplify the concept of lightning by explaining the frozen water in the cloud bumps into each other and causes an electrical charge. That electrical charge can turn into lightning. We'll use bent paperclips to represent lightning in the cups.
