 Math: Positional Words

• Have students sit around the math carpet in a circle. Have prepared a couple of objects or stuffed animals and a chair. Have students help to answer your positional word questions. Place the “bear” under the chair, on the chair, next to the chair. Continue with the second object having the students use their math vocabulary to explain their answers. To get the kids up and trying out the positional words, have them stand next to their table/chair. Have them follow your prompts as they stand next to, under, on, etc.

After students are confident with their positional words, it’s time to wrap up the shape unit with one of these fun positional word/shape monster crafts.

 Writer's Workshop: Storytelling

The easiest way for me to explain what we are doing is to copy & paste the lesson below...

Boys and girls, you have continued to amaze me with all of your hard work! You might remember that we just wrapped up our unit on becoming authors. Now it’s time for us to keep plugging along in our journey to become the best story writers we can be. We talked before about when we write and illustrate stories, we are actually telling a story! Today I want you all to know that you, too, can be storytellers! When we come down for Writer’s Workshop, I’m going to say, ‘Storytellers!’ You will reply back with, ‘Yes?’ Let’s try it!” (State, “Storytellers!” and have students reply back with “Yes?”)
“I want to read a book to you about a storyteller named Ralph. You will see that Ralph didn’t always call himself a storyteller, but now he does! Would you like to see what changed to make Ralph a storyteller? Let’s read to find out!” (Read aloud the story, Ralph Tells a Story. After the story, have students discuss what changed about Ralph from the beginning of the book to the end. Have students discuss each of the suggestions Ralph gives for writing.)
“Boys and girls, as storytellers there will be times that we get STUCK. We might not know what to write about so we have to get our minds to a storytelling place. When I get stuck as a storyteller, I like to close my eyes and think about the first thing that pops up. Let’s try it together. Close your eyes and think.” (Call on multiple students and ask them what popped into their heads.) “Nicework! When I closed my eyes, I saw myself driving to work today. I was in the car and passing this big tree I see each day.

I will model that story.” (Model your story by illustrating a picture with words. Have students close their eyes again to get their story. Send students back to their seats to write.)

  Kindermath: Comparing Solid & Flat Shapes

This lesson will have children feeling for flat/solid shapes.
Student pairs will need one baggie with all nine shapes we learned in this unit and play  “Guess the Shape" with their partner. “Simon says get a shape that has three equal sides,” or “Simon says get a shape that has no sides AND can roll.”Is the shape flat or solid?

How many sides do you feel?

Does the shape have any vertices/corners? Is the shape round or straight?

Would the shape roll or stack?

~The first evening of conferences are tonight from 4-7.
~We are still collecting new or next-to-new books for our Book Drive.
