The kids are working hard to gain an understanding of subtracting and it's time to focus on this abstract symbol. To begin the lesson, the kids will hear the story, If You Were a Minus Sign by: Trisha Speed Shaskan. Next, I will call up some students to represent the following scenario. “There were 5 kids at the park, but then 4 of the kids walked home.” “What is the symbol we use to show that we are taking away? The kids will hold up the poster where they belong in the statement {5 – 4 = 1}. Other scenarios include:
* 6 dogs were in the yard but 4 dogs ran away, 6 – 4 = 2
* 5 butterflies were on the flower but 2 butterflies flew away, 5 – 2 = 3

In this lesson, students change the strength and direction of a wrecking ball’s push in order to solve a tricky problem. The activity, Don't Crush That House, is a game in which students experiment with the force of a paper wrecking ball in order to knock down a wall of cups. The challenge is...they can’t knock down the paper houses!
