  Writer's Workshop: Choosing a Writing Topic

DAILY 5
 Our goal is 10 minutes of uninterrupted writing time. Each component of the DAILY 5 is critical to practice so that the children become independent in their skill development. Eventually, all the components will be happening at the same time with students participating at various ones. The components are:

Read to Self
Work on Writing
Word Work
Listen to Stories
Read to Someone

Math: Measuring

New Concept: We have been making comparisons of objects. Bring two  students up and compare heights. Sort the students into the category of shorter, longer/taller, and same. Select two students who are about the same height. Show the students how they are the about the same. Then ask one student to stand on a small step stool or a few blocks. Is child 1 now taller than child 2? Many will say yes. Explain that child 1 is still the same height, but we are not measuring correctly. 
Whole Group Explore: Today you are going to measure a few things in the room. You will need to be sure that you line up the bottom of the object and be comparing or measuring using a craft stick. You will be on a hunt for things in the room that are longer/taller, shorter, or the same and draw a picture and/or label the items you find. 
Student Application: Students will practice tracing and writing 5, 6, 7  
Students will color the objects that are taller/longer.  
Students will draw a scarecrow that is taller.

 Social Studies
Today we are going to begin learning about people and events that we celebrate. First, what does the word “celebrate” mean? Tell students that celebrate could mean to have a party, but it could also mean to learn and understand what something is. We celebrate people and events from long ago when we learn about why they were important.
Read Learn & Celebrate and discuss things that we celebrate (people and events). Now that you know that we celebrate important people and events from the past, we are going to do an activity where we sort picture cards into these two categories. If the picture is an example of a person or group of people that we celebrate, we will put it in the “people” category. If it is an event from the past that we celebrate, we will put it in the “event” column.

~In the Wednesday envelope will be a breathing technique that Mrs. Weninger taught to your child last Friday. She plans to send home these Mindful Movement breathing techniques in the Wednesday envelope over the next few weeks.
~We enjoyed celebrating with Carlene yesterday...

We have to teach the routine for this portion of Writer's Workshop where they learn the expectations for sharing their work. It's about listening with their whole body.
A storybook reader is scheduled for 9:10 to read Pippa the Pumpkin Fairy

 Math: Comparing Numbers

New Concept: These next few lessons will be used to reinforce number order, counting, and fluency. The children will sort out three sets of number cards (numerals, objects, ten-frames...see photo below.)

Whole Group Explore: Partners will order their cards and sort them in a similar way.
Student Application: Students will practice counting, tracing, and writing numerals 6-10.

Music Today

It's Election Day in Kindergarten too!
The children will be casting their ballot to see if we should have popcorn or crackers as a light snack this afternoon. We will graph the results together.

~We are  in need of AAA batteries if you have any to spare. Thank you!

~We now have a bakery play center in our classroom. The kids will be working in REAL flour and making bakery goods out of playdough.
Forewarning...they may have flour residue on themselves when they come home! 😉

The children made it 4 minutes of uninterrupted 'Read to Self' time yesterday.
  Writer's Workshop: Writing Workshop has Routines: Try It Out!
Like yesterday, we have to teach the routine for this portion of Writer's Workshop which is when they go off to write.

Character Education
 First, Mrs. Weninger will be finishing the book I AM PEACE where the kids learn that the boy in the book found the anchor to his boat which means he has learned ways to calm his body and brain and like I keep saying...SETTLE his GLITTER! She will also be teaching them two breathing techniques and sending home pictures so they can try it at home...SNAKE breath and ELEPHANT breath. Project: The Rainbow Fish
Yesterday we read The Rainbow Fish as a part of the Social Studies lesson on sharing. Today, the children will make the Rainbow Fish and create a sentence that says how they can be a good friend.

Library Day
Math: More & Fewer
New Concept: Today we are going to talk again about more and fewer. This time I am going to take one of the number cards out and snap that many cubes together. Now when I put them behind my back my partner will pick a hand. This time we will put our pieces on a ten-frame and place it to the side of the "More/Fewer" spinner. We will use our math talk card, then spin. Whoever wins that spin will get a counter.   
Whole Group Explore: Now you will get a chance to play this game with your partner. Remember to play fair and be a good partner.   
Student Application: Students will practice writing 8, 9, 10
Students will color the items in the set that have fewer brown and more red.

The class is split into 3 groups: red, blue, purple. When the groups read, we are working on pausing, expression, and speed. Below is an example of one of the pages.

To get the most out of this portion of Writer's Workshop, the children need to learn what is expected of them...eyes on teacher, listening ears, sitting criss-cross, etc.
