  Language Arts: Through the big book, In the Sea, the children will work on building fluency by doing an Echo-Read (reading it like the teacher). The kiddos will also work on retelling the story.
 Writer's Workshop: We continue our focus on Concepts About Print...~Understand that words carry meaning, are comprised of letters, go from left to right, and have spaces between them.

Math:  Shape Pictures  
We begin a new unit of Geometry today by hearing the story, The Shape of Things by Dayle Ann Dodds. The children will brainstorm all the things they can think of that resemble a particular shape. Their ideas are placed on a poster. Finally, each child will choose a shape and creat something out of it. For instance, they may choose a square and then draw a triangle on top to create a house.
Their work focuses on:
~Developing language to describe and compare 2-D shapes and their attributes.
~Relating 2-D shapes to real-world objects.

 Using the Reader's Theater story In the Sea by Cynthia Swain , the children will help build a concept web pertaining to sea life (as pictured below). Through the first reading of this story, they will build concepts about print and build academic/sight word vocabulary.
 Writer's Workshop: Developing Concepts of Print
~Put spaces between words.
~Write from left to right.
~Begin a sentence with an uppercase letter.
~Use end punctuation correctly.
 Daily 5!
 Math: Toss the Chips
The kids toss 10 chips (one side is red, the other is yellow) and count how many red and yellow appear in one toss. They record that data on a grid.
Their work focuses on:
~Decomposing numbers in different ways.
~Using numbers to record how many.

   Who is Abraham Lincoln? The children will learn more about him in a book that uses the sight word 'this'. Our plan is to work on it during Quiet Time today so look for it to come home this evening.


~In last week's Wednesday envelope, there was a note about entering a dog story/dog picture contest. The entry due date is this Friday, February 21.
~Look for the small paw included in today's envelope to write down any reading minutes you have done. I will send another one home on Friday.
**We will be seeing sled dogs and a Musher today from 2:15-2:45 as a part of our 'Paws for Reading' theme during I Love to Read Month.
                                    **This was rescheduled from yesterday.
