Math: Race to a Dollar
New Concept: Yesterday we put items into groups of 10, then counted by 10 until we reached 100. Did you know this is a handy thing to do when you are working with money too? As you know, a penny is worth 1, but a dime is worth 10. Select a student to act as your partner as you show them how to play Race to a Dollar. After each turn count how many you have on your board like this, “10, 20, 30, 31, 32, 33.”
Whole Group Explore: Today you will play Race to a Dollar with your partner. Be sure you remember to tell your partner how much money you have after your turn.

Writer's Workshop: Make an Opinion about something

DAILY 5

New Concept: Dump a pile of snap cubes in a pile on the floor. Then say, If I wanted to count all of these snap cubes I know I could, but I think it would be confusing. I am going to use a 10 frame to help me keep track of the cubes I am counting. Ask How many boxes are on this 10 frame? Right… 10. So if I fill the whole 10 frame, I know I will have 10. How many 10 frames will I need to reach 100? Count by 10s to show that you will need 10 10 frames. I am going to use these 10 frames to help me keep track while I count. After I fill up one 10 frame, I will write how many I have all together. I think I can do this another way. I can use the 10 frame to help me count out 10, but then I can scoop them into a pile and label the pile with 10 (20, 30, 40…).
Whole Group Explore: Today you will count with your partner. You will use the 10 frame to make ten, then scoop them into a pile and label them like I did. See if you can reach 100!
.

Student Application: Students work independently to count by 10.
