Using actions, the kids will review the vocabulary words (delight, waddling, spotted, sigh, and skid) that are in the story, Huggapotomus. Next, we will will compare/contrast the stories, Huggapotomus to The Crayon Box That Talked, to see what similarities and differences there are between the two.

Kindermath: 

 Understand Quantities 0-5

This lesson focuses on being able to state a quantity regardless of the arrangement or position of items. For instance, a group of 5 blocks (lined up, placed in a circle, stacked) is still 5.
Bus Safety 
Stay seated on the bus and cross in front of the bus safely.

 Today, I will reread parts of Huggapotamus so the children can answer 'text-dependent' questions such as these: 
     ~Albert is described as "too rough." What details from the text support this 
             description?       
         ~On page 23, what clues do the pictures give us that the words do not?      
         ~Why did Albert like to give hugs so much? 

 Our library time is from 8:50-9:20 today.

KinderMath: Ordering Numbers 0-5

Referring to the Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, the kids will be working on lining up the paper beds 0-5 and placing that number of 'monkeys' on each bed. Next, they will line the beds from 5-0 and put the corresponding number of monkeys on each bed. This lesson helps develop Collaborative Number Sense.

It's already our 10th day of school! To celebrate, the kids will meet Zero the Hero, our puppet friend who loves the number 0 and only comes to visit every 10th day of school.

Bus Safety 

Today, we will focus on waiting for the bus in a safe place and being on time for the bus.

Nathan, AKA Sunshine, will stop in our classroom at 1:00 to present a quick lesson on being fearless. He is coming at the same time for the next 6 days to present new topics on leadership and to get the kids pumped up for their run! 

Phy Ed today!

~The APEX pep rally yesterday afternoon sure helped the kids get pumped up for their fun run fundraiser on September 29! If you are able, thank you so much for helping your child get sponsors for each lap they run!

Using the story, Huggapotamus, the kids will ask/answer simple recall questions such as: What does an author/illustrator do? Who are the characters? etc. In addition, we will learn about the vocabulary words in the story. (delight, waddle, spotted, skidded, sigh)

Kindermath: Read and Write 0

            Using the story, Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, the kids will be acting out the story to get to zero. What does '0' mean? How do you know? The kids will work on this skill through a variety of activities.

Our school is having a fun run fundraiser pep rally today!
Over the next 6 school days, your child will learn leadership qualities from staff representing Apex Leaders Co. in preparation of the Fun Run to be held on September 29. Your child will be able to ask family & friends to sponsor their run. 
Watch for important info coming today!

KinderLiteracy

Again, KinderLiteracy is the name of our reading program we use for kindergarten at Maple Lake. It digs deep into texts to help build understanding and meaning through weekly themes that support comprehension. 
This week's theme is Friends and the focused text is: Huggapotamus by: Steve Metzger.

Today, the children will hear the story for enjoyment and build an interest in the topic and expand their prior knowledge.

KinderMath: Comparing Numbers to 5
The kids will be comparing two different amounts of items (up to 5) and use math vocabulary (more/bigger, less/smaller) to tell what they notice. This is a basic introduction lesson for comparing numbers.

Bus Safety 

This week the kids will learn about being safe while riding the bus. The children will see a live puppet show put on by M & M Bus Co. inside one of their buses this morning. The puppets help introduce the safety topics we will learn this week.

KinderMath: Count to 5 and Back

Again, it may seem like an easy concept, but children need to accurately count orally, count objects, and identify the missing number when counting forward and back. We are building the foundational skills for counting and cardinality.
What better way to teach this than to work with the story, Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed!

Computer Class with Mr. Brown will be each Friday from 2:20-2:50. 

~Your child should read the letter book that comes home each day! On the cover page, have your child say, "C spells /c/." as well as on the inside cover page. Next, they slowly touch each dot with their pointer finger while saying, "/c/, /c/, /c/, cat and so forth for the rest of the book.
