New Concept: A few weeks ago, we used this Whole/Part/Part mat to put numbers together and to take them apart. When we put numbers together we use this symbol (+). Today we are going to use these boards again. This time we will change the words we use just a little bit. First I am going to roll the dice and count out cubes to match. I will put this on one of my “parts.” I will do the same thing for the other “part.” When I put them together in the whole box, I have 6. Now, instead of saying 4 and 2 makes 6. I am going to use the big math words. 4 plus 2 equals 6. (I will write this equation down.) It is repeated several times so the kids get used to the language.
Whole Group Explore: Today you will use our new BIG math words as we use our whole/part/part board to do addition. While one of you is using the
board, the other will be writing the equation down.
Student Application: They will practice writing the addition equations.
These will be hanging in the hall for you to see at conferences.
