Reading Skills
Through the chant Row, Row, Row Your Boat, we will continue to work on noticing the punctuation and pause accordingly. The children will use what they learn and apply it toward our Reader's Theater script in About Me.

DAILY 5: The kids are really starting to get the idea of sustaining their focus on the books during Read to Self. Again, 'reading the pictures' is reading!
Writer's Workshop: Writers work on Stamina
Just as we are working on this in 'Read to Self' so must we build stamina for writing. Our goal is 10 minutes...

Writer's Workshop: Telling a Story vs.Naming Parts

This is a very , very basic intro to how writer's tell a story. While most of the children

are labeling one (maybe two) sounds heard in a word, it's important they see me

'think aloud' as I model writing a simple sentence.

Math: More and Fewer
New Concept: Today we are going to talk about more and fewer. I am going to make two rows of snap cubes. I have a green row that has 4 cubes and a yellow row that has 6.  6 is more than 4.  I know this because if I line them up, I can see that I have 2 more of the yellow. I can also say that I have fewer green cubes than yellow. DID YOU KNOW?...Best practice suggests you use “fewer” for things that can be counted like objects. “Less” is for items that can’t be counted, like liquids, sugar…
Whole Group Explore: Today you are going to play a new game. First I will take 10 cubes that are snapped together. Partner 1 will put them behind their back and break them in two. Partner 2 will guess a hand. Now partner one will show the two pieces. You will use the math talk card to talk about whether one side is more or fewer.
Student Application: Students will practice writing 6, 7, 8.
Students will color the items in a set that have more.
Students will count some of the items and write how many.
Time for Kids: All About Bones

~The children will change into their costumes at 1:20 tomorrow for our party.
~Keep having your child practice their sight words! If you need a list, let me know what list number to send home with your child.

DAILY 5: We continue to work on growing our stamina in order to sustain 'Read to Self' for longer lengths of time. The only way to do this is to practice, practice, practice...

DAILY 5
We are learning how to 'Read to Self' by building stamina for reading behaviors. This takes time and practice to develop. Yesterday, the kids made it 3 minutes of uninterrupted reading on their own! Our goal is about 7-10 minutes.
A storybook reader is scheduled for 9:00 to read Scaredy-Cat Splat.

Character Education: Mrs. Weninger plans to finish the story I AM PEACE with the children today. If there is time, she may teach some breathing techniques to calm our bodies. To view the story, go here.
Library Day

Math: Number Order
Today we are going to talk about ordering numbers. First I want to lay my number cards (1 - 5) out in order. “2 is more than 1, 3 is fewer than 5.”  Embedding this language will help students contextualize this vocabulary for future use. I want to be sure I put them in the right order, so I will need to go back and recount to make sure they are right. Now I want to start building trains of cubes to match the number I have.  So for 1, I will just lay down one cube.  For 2, I know that 2 is 1 more, so I will snap 2 cubes together. I know that 3 is one more than 2, so I will need 3 cubes.   Continue until you have trains laid out for 1-5.
Whole Group Explore: Today, you and your partner will make number trains for 1 - 5.   You will get to be a little creative. Instead of using cubes, your partner and you will use leaves. You will color and cut the leaves out and create a leaf train.
Student Application: Students will complete their own leaf train response sheet to match the one they created with their partner.
Project: Scarecrow

~There will be a math number sheet coming home today for practice. The reason behind writing their numbers accurately is to train the brain to make the strokes automatic so it becomes a part of their muscle memory. Please have your child write in pencil and pay close attention to where the lines are. It can be returned when they are finished. Thank you!
Have a GREAT weekend!
