PhyEd Today
New Concept: Today we are going to keep looking at our study on capacity. Fill a bowl with rice. Ask, I wonder if this pop bottle (20 oz) has more or less capacity. Invite a few responses. Then transfer the rice to the bottle using the funnel. When your students notice that the rice does not fill the bottle ask them what they think happened. Then ask, What do you think will happen if I pour it back in the bowl? Guide students to use the language of higher or lower capacity.
Whole Group Explore: Now you will document our rice experiment. You will start by drawing the first bowl we used. Now draw how high the rice was in the bowl. Now I will pour it into another container. Which one should we try next? Now draw how the rice looks in this next container. Continue until the response page has been completed. Which container had the most capacity? Which had the least capacity?
Student Application: Students will complete the independent practice on their own.
