KinderMath: Combining Sets to 5

We begin a new unit today, Addition to 10. For these beginning lessons, the kids will be working on combining sets, but each day we will just work to a specific total. Today and tomorrow the kids will work on combinations to 5. The kids will NOT be expected or asked to use symbols (=, +) to represent their thinking. We will use hula hoops & string to create a part-part-whole template. (See the image below.) The kids will stand in the hula hoops to find out how many in all.

 4 monkeys were on the bed (part) and 1 monkey on the floor (part). How many monkeys in all? 5 (whole)

The children will work on writing sentences using these types of words. Again, mastery is not expected but exposure and opportunity helps the children learn what these words do!

KinderMath: Find Differences of Sets to 20
In today’s lesson, the kids will be working on stating how many the difference between two sets of 20 is. For this activity, each pair will need two baggies of items-each filled with a different number of items. We will model dumping out a sack of bears and a sack of tiles where the tiles can be“matched” to the bears. We will demonstrate lining them up and determining how many FEWER is seen of one set. This will be modeled 2-3 more times and then the partners will do the same, but record their answers on the recording sheet as shown below.
