Two students come to the front of the room, stand side by side, and join hands. I segment the initial sound and the rest of the sounds in the word cat. One student is /c/ and the other is /at/. When they hold hands, they are the whole word, cat, but when I touch their shoulders, they are each just part of the word.
We will use a other words with this activity as well.
