New Concept: Today we are going to use our balance again. We know if we put 3 bears in one side of the balance, we will need to put 3 bears on the other side of the balance to make them the same. I want to do the same thing with my playdough. I am going to make a ball of playdough on one side, then put another ball on the other side to make them the same. Demonstrate adding and deleting the playdough until they are the same weight. Make them into round balls. Now I wonder what will happen if I change the shape of one of my playdough balls. Will it still balance? Flatten one of the balls and place it back in the cup to demonstrate conservation of mass. Explain that just because the shape has changed the weight of it has not.
Whole Group Explore: Today you and your partner will repeat the playdough activity that I just did. First make two balls of clay that are the same weight. Then change the shapes of the balls to see if they still balance.
Project: After reading Froggy's First Kiss, the children will make Froggy's head out of hearts.
