Writer's Workshop: Drawing Lines for Sounds
I will model orally stretching out the word barn and put up my fingers with how many sounds we hear. “I want to label my barn but I don’t know how to write the word barn. I am going to say it slowly and each sound I hear I will put up a finger. That way, I will know how many sounds I will write. /b/ (one finger), /r/ (two fingers), /n/ (three fingers). I have 3 fingers up so I know I need to draw three lines. Now I am going to say it again slowly and see if I can figure out what the three letters I need to write are.” The kids will practice this again by trying to label a pre-drawn picture of a mountain scene. Social Studies Connection: Neighborhood/Community Quinito knows everyone in his neighborhood! He takes readers on a tour, describing every family member’s and neighbor’s job or role.
Children learn that every community member makes valuable contributions.
