Math: Part-Part/Whole...Addition
New Concept: A few weeks ago we used this mat (part-part/whole) to put numbers together and to take them apart. When we put numbers together we use this symbol (+). Today we are going to use these boards again. This time we will change the words we use just a little bit. First I am going to roll the dice and count out cubes to match. I will put this on one of my “parts.” I will do the same thing for the other “part.” When I put them together in the whole box, I have 6. Now, instead of saying 4 and 2 makes 6. I am going to use the big math words. "4 plus 2 equals 6". I will write this equation down. Repeat several times so students get used to the language.
Whole Group Explore: There are some strategies you can use to help you with addition or adding numbers together like I just did. We already know how to count on our fingers. One of the other strategies is to use manipulatives such as snap cubes. Today you will use our new BIG math words as we use our whole/part/part board to do addition. While one of you is using the board, the other will be writing the equation down.
Student Application: Students will practice writing their equations.
