New ConceptSometimes when we think about measuring, we measure in a different way. Imagine you wanted to put tile on our classroom floor. You would have to know how many tile squares to buy. Let’s pretend that this paper I have is my floor that I want to cover. I am going to use these squares to cover it. Place 1” squares over the surface of your construction paper. I want to be sure each square is touching because I don’t want any gaps in my flooring! After you have all of the squares in place, invite the students to help you count them. Imagine I changed my mind about the tiles and I wanted these (snap cubes) instead. Would I need the same number of tiles? Let’s check. Why do I need more of the snap cubes than the squares?
FluencyQuickly show the cards to students for a group response.
Use fluency cards to add variety and fun to your fluency practice.
Whole Group ExploreNow you are going to do a similar activity.
Students will cut, glue, and count the “tiles” (basketballs or footballs) they need to cover their larger square.
Student Application: Students will cover the area of the rug with cats.

~The 100th day is tomorrow!
