Looking at the cover of a book can help you summarize and synthesize information you will learn in the book. What clues do you see that can help you summarize what this book is about? Are all fruits the same? How can you tell?
Read the title.
Ask: Who can come up and point to the title of the book?
Read the name of the author.
Ask: Who would like to find the author's name on this book cover?
Display the inside front cover of the book. Read the question aloud. Invite students to share the names of their favorite fruit. Ask: How can this picture help summarize what this book is about in one word? What words can you use to describe the fruit?
Point out the title page.
Ask: How many words are there in the title? Which is the first word? Which way do we read the title?
Point to each word as you read the title. Have children read it chorally as you point to each word again.
Ask: How many letters are in the first word? Which is a capital letter? Which is a small letter? Continue with the other words in the title.
Point to the character group icons.
Say: What do these icons tell us?
Point to and read the setting of the script.
Say: An orchard is land where plants and trees grow. What does the setting tell us? What do you think the settings in this book will look like?

DAILY 5
Math: Part-Part/Whole
New Concept: Yesterday we played a game where we counted the cubes out of our bag and thought about all the different ways we could make that number. For example, we counted out 7 cubes...4 of them might have been orange and 3 might have been green.
New Concept: Yesterday we played a game where we counted the cubes out of our bag and thought about all the different ways we could make that number. For example, we counted out 7 cubes...4 of them might have been orange and 3 might have been green.
Today I want to show you a new tool you can use to put numbers together and to take them apart. First I am going to count out 5 cubes and snap them together. Then I am going to count out 5 more, but I am going to break them into two parts. I am going to put 2 on one side and 3 on another. Then I can use my “math talk” cards to read my mat. "2 and 3 make 5."
Whole Group Explore: Partner one will roll the dice, count the dots on the dice, and build a row with that many cubes. Partner one will put it on the “whole” box on their mat. Partner two will count out the same number of cubes, then break them into two parts. Partner two will place these parts on the “part” boxes on their mat. You will use your math talk cards to talk about what you built
