Reader's Theater We Like Fruit

Looking at the cover of a book can help you summarize and synthesize information you will learn in the book. What clues do you see that can help you summarize what this book is about? Are all fruits the same? How can you tell?
Read the title.
Ask: Who can come up and point to the title of the book?
Read the name of the author.
Ask: Who would like to find the author's name on this book cover?
Display the inside front cover of the book. Read the question aloud. Invite students to share the names of their favorite fruit. Ask: How can this picture help summarize what this book is about in one word? What words can you use to describe the fruit?
Point out the title page.
Ask: How many words are there in the title? Which is the first word? Which way do we read the title?
Point to each word as you read the title. Have children read it chorally as you point to each word again.
Ask: How many letters are in the first word? Which is a capital letter? Which is a small letter? Continue with the other words in the title.
Point to the character group icons.
Say: What do these icons tell us?
Point to and read the setting of the script.
Say: An orchard is land where plants and trees grow. What does the setting tell us? What do you think the settings in this book will look like?
A storybook reader is scheduled for 9:30 to read There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bell.
Writer's Workshop: Reindeer Report

DAILY 5
Math: Part-Part/Whole
New Concept: I want to keep working on putting parts together or adding parts to make another number. I am going to roll the dice twice and put those cubes on my mat. Then I will think of a story to talk about my cubes. Example: "I came in this morning there were 5 cars in the parking lot. Then Mrs. Smith came in behind me. How many cars were in the lot now?" I will do a few more examples with the children before they do partner work.
Whole Group Explore: Now you are going to work with your partner. One partner will roll the dice and count out the cubes. The other partner will need to think of a story that will go with these cubes and tell it. Then you will put together the whole cubes. Use your math talk cards: ____and ____make____.
Student Application: Students will practice putting together their parts into whole while writing their numbers. They will also write the number combinations.

Memories from our Reindeer Games on Friday:
First, the children were movin' and groovin' reindeer style, making reindeer headbands and playing Pin the Nose on the Reindeer with Mrs. Jost.

~Our final event of the morning had us trotting through the halls to spread our reindeer cheer! The kids had a blast!
~What a great visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. I will show a few kids each day this week that had a chance to visit with Santa...
