DECK THE HALLS WITH BOUGHS OF HOLLY...
This morning, we are making three different holiday decorations to fill the kindergarten hallway. This is sure to heighten the holiday spirit! They will be making a Santa, silly Christmas star, glittered ornament and Christmas tree.
Math: Part-Part/Whole

New Concept: Yesterday we played a game where we counted the cubes out of our bag and thought about all the different ways we could make that number.  For example, we counted out 7 cubes...4 of them might have been orange and 3 might have been green. Today I want to show you a new tool you can use to put numbers together and to take them apart. First I am going to count out 5 cubes and snap them together. Then I am going to count out 5 more, but I am going to break them into two parts. I am going to put 2 on one side and 3 on another. Then I can use my “math talk” cards to read my mat. "2 and 3 make 5."
Whole Group Explore: Partner one will roll the dice, count the dots on the dice, and build a row with that many cubes. Partner one will put it on the “whole” box on their mat. Partner two will count out the same number of cubes, then break them into two parts. Partner two will place these parts on the “part” boxes on their mat. You will use your math talk cards to talk about what you built.
Student Application
Students will practice breaking whole numbers into parts while writing their numbers.

Math: Making 10 in a Variety of Ways
New Concept: A few weeks ago we played a game where we counted the cubes out of our bag and thought about all the different ways we could make that number. We are going to play that game again. I am going to take a handful of cubes out of my bag and put the colors togethe so I have 4 blue cubes and 3 orange cubes. We need to think of other ways we can make 7 with these cubes. Ask students to help you find other color combinations to 7. Repeat this procedure several times. Use the math talk cards and white board markers to write your combinations.
Whole Group Explore: Today, you and your partner will play match it with your cubes.  One partner will start by grabbing a handful of cubes and putting them together. They will use the math talk cards to read their cube combinations. They will then say "Match it". The other partner will match their combination and write their combinations on the math talk card with a white board marker.
Student Application:  Students will use two different colored crayons to make 10 in a variety of ways.  They will write the different combinations they created.

Writer's Workshop: Writers are Good Partners
Math: Making 10
New Concept: Yesterday we looked at how helpful ten-frames are. Let’s review for a minute. Place 6 cubes on a ten-frame and invite the students to discuss what they are noticing. Guide students towards recognizing that 6 is one full row (5) and one more, that you just need 4 more to fill the whole frame (or make 10). Repeat this guided discussion a few times.
Whole Group ExploreToday, you are going to play Ten Frame Fun again. However, today we will add a math talk card. Let me show you how to use it. You will play the game the same way you did yesterday. After your turn you will use the math talk card. “I have 7. I need 3 more to make 10.”
Student ApplicationStudents will fill in the missing pumpkins and complete the statement...I have___. I need ____  more to make 10.

Math: Making Ten
New Concept: We have really found out how helpful a ten-frame can be over the last few days. I want to show you something else I like about a ten-frame. Ten-frames really help me to see what a number looks like. I know how to write the number 7, but when I see 7 items on a ten-frame, I can see so much more. I can see that 7 is one full row of cubes and 2 more. I can also see that I need 3 more to have a full ten-frame.
Whole Group Explore: Today, I am going to show you a new game that you will play with your partner. It is called Ten Frame Fun!  Students will take turns rolling the dice. They will move that many cubes onto their ten frame. They keep taking turns until both of their ten frames are filled up. Then they play again.
Student Application: We will need to use the count and check strategy on this paper again today. We won’t be able to move the pictures, so we will want to check them off as we count them.
