~Today we begin focusing on word families. These are word patterns that help children decode words Why It Is Important. When children begin to read, they must sound out every letter. This is slow and breaks up the flow of the words, making it hard to figure out the meaning. When learning families of words, children are able to read familiar patterns of letters quickly and fluently.
**Each word family has a home link that we ask you do with your child. The more they work with this skill, the better they will read! It will come home the first day we introduce a family.

~We will not be having Book Club this week as I am formally assessing each child in order to have the most up-to-date information for conferences. Your child will be choosing books from their book box to read to you at home each night this week. Keep in mind, that these are books that they have already brought home but it is key to let them grow in fluency and confidence. Have them keep their book bag in their backpack all week. Please sign the communication notebook in their book bag to let me know that they read to you.
A storybook reader is scheduled for 9:10 to read Pig the Pug & Dog and Boots.

New ConceptThe other day, we practiced using our whole/part/part equations and using manipulatives as a subtraction strategy. Today I want to show you another strategy. It is already one that we are very good at. You can draw a picture to help you. Let’s say I had this problem in front of me and I was not sure how to figure it out. (5-2) I could just draw a picture!  Draw 5 of something simple, then cross out 2 of them.
Whole Group ExploreToday you are going to draw pictures to solve some math equations. The pages will have woodland animals which means animals
you might see in the woods.

~Last week I sent home your conference date and time. If you haven't done so, please return the paper that tells me what you would like to chat about.
