Referring to the vocabulary words within the story (community, volunteer, emergency, risk) we will discuss these questions:
1) What and who might we find in a commmunity?
2) What is a way you can volunteer?
3) What might one do if there was an emergency?
4) How do some community helpers take risks each day?

It's important that the children go back to read what they wrote. This lesson really focuses in on the 'how' and 'why'.

 Math: Combining Sets to 5
We begin a new unit today, Addition to 10. For these beginning lessons, the kids will be working on combining sets, but each day we will just work to a specific total. Today and tomorrow the kids will work on combinations to 5. The kids will NOT be expected or asked to use symbols (=, +) to represent their thinking. We will use hula hoops & string to create a part-part-whole template. (See the image below.) The kids will stand in the hula hoops to find out how many in all.
 4 monkeys were on the bed (part) and 1 monkey on the floor (part). How many monkeys in all? 5 (whole)
