DAILY 5
Smart Room Highlight: Collecting Coins Along the Balance Beam
Math: Composing and Decomposing Numbers...Day 2
New Concept: Today I want to show you a new word. It is a number bond. We have seen this in some of our math review, but today I want to use it to tell a story. We have learned about these before but they looked like puzzle pieces. These will work the same way, they will just look a little different.
I am going to tell a story and use my number bond as I do.
There was a dog and he found 3 bones in the garden (put cubes in smaller circle). He found 4 bones by the shed (put cubes in the other small circle). How many bones did he find all together? (move all the cubes into the large circle)
Whole Group Explore: Now you will work with your partner as I tell the story.
•Mylee found 4 pink shells and 3 purple shells on the beach. How many did she find in all?
• The horse ate 3 apples and 5 carrots. How many treats did he get in all?
• James had 4 red jelly beans and 6 green jelly beans. How many did he have all together?
Student Application: Students will create their own number bonds to solve the problems.

Science: Stars Have a Pattern
Connect: Remember how we learned that stars have different brightness and are different sizes? Those are two of the characteristics of stars.
Teach: Today, I am going to show you the third thing we are going to learn about stars….stars have a pattern! I bet you know what a pattern is, right? A star pattern is called a constellation. A constellation is like a picture in the sky. Let’s look at some. We can use a star map to help us find them! If you search Google, it is very easy to find a star map online. Show the constellations and have a discussion. You can talk about the names, how they are like a dot to dot, etc.
Active Engagement: Now it’s your turn. You are going to be a scientist! You are going to create a constellation! I have made a pretend star map. You need to make a constellation by connecting the stars, like a dot to dot. Remember, you don’t need to use all of the stars, just enough to make your picture. Just like the ones we saw on the star map, it takes a little imagination to see the “picture”. Remember to give your new constellation a name, just like constellations were named years ago. Older children can also create a story go to with their new constellation!
Link: Remember boys and girls, today and everyday, good scientists know that the stars in the sky make patterns called constellations.
