There is always room to add more to a story. Kids need to see that when they think they're done, they've just begun! Giving details strengthens the story and this takes lots of practice.
For this activity, each pair needs 5 to 10 cubes and 1 cup. The partners will take turns hiding some of the cubes under the cup. The other partner will be responsible for stating the missing part.
Next, each pair gets a baggie of items to compare. For instance: 12 bears to 4 tiles; 13 tiles to 7 bears; 14 tiles to 8 bears etc. They dump out the baggie and line up all of the bears and then line up all of the tiles where they can be“matched" to determine how many FEWER is seen in one set.
