The kids will be focusing on the “extras” of a teen number (15 is 10 and 5 extras; 16 is 10 and 6 extras, etc.). Using the story, How Many Snails? by Paul Giganti, the kids will count the cupcakes with sprinkles and have their partner show that on their ten-frame. “We counted 13 cupcakes with sprinkles. Next, they will count the cupcakes with white icing. “How many cupcakes did we count with white icing? 14. ”Now, just state the extras that are off your ten frame board. 3, 4. So, what is more: 3 or 4? Yes, 4! So, the cupcakes that were ten four or 14 is more. The same type of statements like above will be repeated throughout the book for the children to show on their ten-frame.
