 A storybook reader is scheduled for 10:10 to read Michael Recycle.

Math: Racing Bears 
In this activity, 4 bears are lined up at the starting point and a dot cube that contains a 1, 2, or 3 is rolled to move the bears. More than one bear can be moved on a turn. For instance, if a 3 is rolled, one bear can move forward 2 spaces and another bear can move 1 space. The bears race to the finish line to collect a counter and start over again until 10 counters are collected. Their work focuses on:
~Counting spaces and moving on a gameboard.
~Thinking strategically about moves on the gameboard.

 Time For Kids: Money
Again, we share the magazine with all K-classes so your child will be able to keep a copy once a month.

Smart Room Highlight: Penguin House-Toss the Bean Bag

Like the photos show, the children will follow the directions as to where to toss the bean bag.

~Lunch for tomorrow will be: Pepperoni Pizza or Ham Sub

Phonics: We are beginning to learn about the digraph "th" today. Watch for a letter coming home today that explains who the "H Brothers" are. The letter explains the fun way we introduce th, ch, sh, and wh.

Writer's Workshop: An introduction to Journals...a new tool that we are using.

Math: Quick Images: Ten Frames
The kids will see a brief image on the SmartBoard of dots arranged in a Ten-Frame and then try to use pennies to reproduce the quantity on their own Ten-Frame.
Their work focuses on:
~Using a Ten-Frame to develop visual images of quantities up to 10.
Computer Class Today!

DAILY 5!
 Smart Room Highlight: Feed the Penguins...Count how many fit in it's mouth.

 Language Arts: Reader's Theater We Like Fruit Performance to our Classmates
Each group will read their part using all the skills learned.

Math: Roll and Record
Using two dot cubes, the kids roll the cubes to find out the total number of dots and record those numbers on a grid. We are really working on identifying the number of dots on the cube just by looking at the one that has more and then count on. For example, look at the dice pictured above. We want the kids to say, "4...5,6,7."
Their work focuses on:
~Using numbers to represent quantities.

Time for Kids Topic: It's the New Year!
Library Day!
Happy New Year! The children are making a picture of themselves blowing a horn to ring in 2014!
 Smart Room: It's penguins galore in the Smart Room! The children will learn about the stations today and I will highlight the new ones next week.

 
~What an honor to have lunch with some hard working K-Kids! I am looking forward to this fine dining experience!
~It was fun celebrating Carter & Joe's birthdays yesterday!

Writer's Workshop: Labeling pictures in a "Winter" book.
  Language Arts: Using the text from Are You Sleeping, Brother John? The children will make their voices rise at a question mark and fall at a period and use inflection and intonation to make their reading sound like talking. We will transfer that learning to our Reader's Theater book We Like Fruit. Watch for homework to come home for this tonight. Have your child read it using inflection in their voice.

New Work on Writing: "Write the Room" (Each child has their own folder to find words all over our classroom that start with a particular letter.)

Math: Collect 10 Together
Partners work together to collect 10 pennies using a 1, 2, 3 dot cube.
Their work focuses on:
~Counting a set of objects.
~Keeping track of a growing set of objects.
~Finding the total after a small amount (1, 2, 3) is added to a set up to 7.

Smart Room!

~It feels great to be back in the swing of things. I am looking forward to the rest of the school year!
