We begin a new unit today called Numbers 10-19.
Today's Lesson: About 10...Count it Out
  **A note from the author of this unit...

Teen numbers are no easy task for kindergarten students. You will hear the repeated term, “Ten and some extras.” It is vital when learning teen numbers that your child knows they are teen numbers for one reason only...they all contain ONE group of ten. We want to be sure your child does not think teen numbers are a 1 and a 2.

1 and 2 make 3 and not 12. 

Your child should know and be able to explain that 10 and 2 make 12, not 1 and 2.

In this unit you will hear the reference to “say ten” push ups. Say ten push ups are yet again another way students can see visually the combinations that teen numbers are made up of. They are made up of ten and some extras!

Writer's Workshop: Mistakes are Okay!
Many children are apprehensive about making mistakes when learning to write a story. This lesson is all about taking risks and not being afraid to write what you hear. At this age, correct spelling is reserved for sight words only.

~The children will be exploring weight today with connecting cubes. We will look at how many cubes it would take to weigh a variety of smaller objects. (marker, book, crayon, etc.)

Reindeer by: Katie Marsico is the focus book for the week.

As always, Day 1 we read the story for enjoyment and build an interest in the topic without adding teaching points. 
The comprehension strategy the kids work on this week is Questioning.

Writer's Workshop: Making Words
Today, the kids will work on stretching simple words on their own.

~The children will be exploring length today with connecting cubes. We will look at how many cubes it would take to measure a variety of smaller objects (marker, book, crayon, etc.). Next, we will decide what to use to measure our classroom...cubes, pieces of paper, ourselves? 

Phy Ed Today

~Community members will come once a week to read a story to the children. Sometimes they dress like the theme or characters from the story. The Storybook Reader last week entertained the children with Gingerbread Baby.

~Report cards will be emailed to you today. Your child's latest assessment results will come home today as well. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Kinderwriting: Writing Tools/ABC Chart
Having their own ABC Chart in their 'Writer's Folder' is a great tool to use when stuck on a letter/word. We want to move away from students asking how to spell something.

KinderMath: Compare Capacity
One small bowl is filled with beans and one larger bowl is filled with beans. “Which bowl do you think holds more?” “Which bowl holds less?” Use small cups to scoop out the beans. Have students count how many cups of beans were in the smaller bowl compared to the larger bowl. Ask students to tell you what would hold more/less in the following scenarios:
pitcher or wheelbarrow; milk carton or teacup; pail or trash bag; sandbox or
pool; pot or yogurt cup; suitcase or lunchbox; etc.
