Language Arts: My intent was to start this portion yesterday but we will be holding off until next Monday to begin.
Math: Same/Different Sort
(This is the lesson as it would sound or look like...)
New Concepts: We have been sorting shapes. Ask the students to look around the room to find two objects that are the same (chairs, light fixtures, tables). Today I want to practice seeing and describing how things are the same and how they are different. Hold up two shapes that are the same color (square and triangle). Say, How are these two shapes the same? (color, they each have straight sides) How are they different? (one has 3 sides, one has 4 sides). Do this for a few different shapes. Name the shapes as you hold them up and have the class repeat the shape names.
Vocabulary words: same, different, sort
Whole Group Explore: Let’s sort some of our shapes by ways they are the same. Let’s sort them by color. Hand each student a shape. Have them sort them into the correct category. Once each student has added their shape, count the number you have in each set. Write that number on a white board or index card. Now let’s sort them by shape. Repeat the process of having your students assist with the sort and counting how many are in each set. Write that number on the sorting mat.
