*We begin a new unit today.*
For these beginning lessons of the unit, the kids will be working on comparing sets up to the number 20. We will take time to review our work with numbers to 100 through a comparison of counted collections. The kids will be making comparisons of the collections based upon their observations. This could be something like, "Our collection has 5 plates of 10 and your collection has 7 plates of 10 so I know yours is more!” Or, students might make observations of less.
“I counted your collection...10, 20, 30... and then I counted our collection...10, 20, 30, 40, 50. I counted higher so I know ours is more!” The kids will then count groups of 10 items onto ten frames and then transfer them onto a plate. Each pair will count their collection by 10’s. After they have counted their collections, they will walk around to the other groups to compare their collection to it.
