Social Studies: The First Thanksgiving

What two groups of people had a fall harvest feast in 1621 at the Plymouth colony?
The Pilgrims and Wampanoag.

Where did the feast take place?

Plymouth Colony.
How long did their harvest feast last?

Three days.

What kinds of food did they eat at the harvest feast?

Corn, cranberries, pumpkin, venison, fish.

Did the Pilgrims and Wampanoag call their feast “Thanksgiving”?
No. People began to call their harvest feast the “First Thanksgiving” hundreds of years later. 

Who helped make Thanksgiving a holiday?

Sarah Hale. She wrote articles and letters to people in the government to ask them to create a Thanksgiving holiday.

Do all people think that Thanksgiving is a happy and joyful holiday?

No. Some people, especially many Native or Indigenous people think of Thanksgiving as a day of sadness.
How can we be respectful of the Native American culture on Thanksgiving?
Learn about their history, not use Native American culture as costumes. 

How can you celebrate Thanksgiving in a respectful way?
Talk about what you are thankful for and learn about the history of Thanksgiving.
