Science: The Sun and Other Stars
We begin this unit of study by talking about what we know about stars and place those thoughts on a chart. Over the next few weeks, the kids will learn about these key points:

• Stars have 3 physical attributes: size, pattern, and brightness.
• Stars change color, density, size and mass as they age.
 • There are 400 billion stars in our Milky Way galaxy.
• The nearest star to the Earth is the sun.
• Stars do not actually twinkle. They appear to twinkle due to turbulence in the Earth’s atmosphere deflecting the light that reaches our eyes.
• Stars are giant balls of gas.
 • A star is formed when dust and gas swirl in one area. As more mass is collected, it becomes heavy and then it becomes hot. If it gets hot enough, it becomes a star. This is called nuclear fusion.
• A shooting star is not a star. It is really a meteor.
• Stars emit energy by converting hydrogen to helium
