 Writer's Workshop: Where to use Capitals
 I want to write, ‘My mom is nice.’ Can you help me find the sounds?” (Listen to students as they help you with the sounds, but write the sentence in a mix of capitals and lowercase letters. After the sentence is complete, sit back and look over your story with a perplexed look.) “Hmm...I think my story looks a little different. Does anyone notice what happened to my words? Yes, I used big letters and small letters. Boys and girls, only certain words need a capital letter and let me tell you a secret.”  “You will never need a capital letter in the middle of a word!
“Let’s try to write my story again using capitals only where needed! I encourage you to be very careful when writing the words in your story. Remember, we want to place little letters inside our words. Only the first letter in your sentence will be big!” Image result for literacy stations iconLiteracy Jobs
Image result for kindermath unit 7 Math: Solid Shapes
We begin a new unit on 2D & 3D shapes today. Below, is a snapshot of the main portion of the lesson.
Read Aloud: Read the book Cubes, Cones, Cylinders, & Spheres by Tana Hoban and take time to stop and discuss the pages that illustrate solid shapes {cones, cylinders, cubes, and spheres}. To kindergarten students these shapes and/or their names may be new. Be sure to identify the shapes by their name and use the words “3D” and “solid” interchangeably.
Follow up with bringing out the solid shapes you brought to share. Show students your party hat, ball, soup can, and box. Describe their attributes by using vocabulary like: flat, curvy, point, roll, slide, stack.
Have students assist you in finding solid shapes around the classroom. {You will chart these tomorrow.}
• Each pair of students will need a set of solid shapes to explore with.
• Today students will have an opportunity to simply explore the solid shapes. As you are circulating around the classroom, be sure to stop in and ask the students about the shape they are holding. You will want to state the shape name if they are unsure, such as calling a ball a “sphere,” etc.
• Even during this initial exploration period you will want the students to use proper math talk vocabulary: three-dimensional, cube, sphere, cylinder, cone, curved, flat, roll, stack, slide.
