Math: Counting By 2's
Place a stack of 20 socks {unmatched} into the middle of the circle. Ask, How many socks do I have here? Can I know without counting? No!
How many socks do you need to put on your shoes? Two! When we have two of something we call this a pair or a match. Will you help me make pairs with my socks?
After making the 10 sets of pairs, go back and count the socks one-by- one. Then ask, Boys and girls, remember mathematicians always want to get to an answer the most efficient way possible! Would you like me to show you a quicker way to count my socks? I will count them by 2’s.”

Count the socks by 2’s. When we count by 2’s, we are skip-counting. Skip-counting means we are skipping over a number to get there quicker. It is kind of like a pattern!
Show students how to “whisper” count to 20. This simply means we whisper the skipped number and “shout” the numbers counted by 2’s. For example, 1 (whisper), 2 (shout), 3 (whisper), 4 (shout), etc.
