                     Writer's Workshop: Storybooks
In this lesson, it is my job to get the kids excited about writing their very first picture book. This is an example of what I might say: “Boys and girls, do you remember this book?” (Hold up a small student reader book.) “That’s right. This is a storybook. Today you will get to make your very own storybook, just like this one. Today you will get to illustrate and write your story right into this story booklet.”
“I’m going to have you visit with a friend so you can tell them all about the story you would like to place into your story booklet. Today as I write in my story booklet, I want to close my eyes and visualize each part.” I will close my eyes and tell them what I'm visualizing while being detailed and dramatic using words like first, then, next, and last. After my story is complete, I will hand out their own storybook for them to begin.

 Math: Looking Closer at Hexagons
Honey the Hexagon will help the kids count the sides and vertices of a hexagon and add “hexagon” to the flat shapes poster. Next, we will review all of the flat shapes on the poster. (circle, triangle, square, & rectangle)
The kids will expand their knowledge of hexagons by exploring with a game called Fill the Hexagon using pattern blocks. They will roll a cube that has the flat shapes drawn on it and whatever shape it lands on is placed inside the hexagon.
The kids will also get time to use Geoboards/Geobands to build shapes. (See photo below.)
