Math: Composing Simple Shapes
~Governor Tim Walz has proclaimed January 27-31 as Paraprofessional Recognition Week. As you know, our paras play an important role in our success, and we would certainly be lost without them. Please join me in thanking our paras for all of the things they do for our students, staff and school district every day.
At the beginning of this lesson we will help the kids become confident in knowing a shape is a shape no matter its size or orientation. I will hold up two cards that are the same shape but not the same size/orientation and ask the kids if they agree that they are the same shape. If they disagree, I will help them understand the rules of shapes.
After we have gone through the shape cards, I will hand out one card per student and call up a shape name and those students will come to the front with their card. We will verify that it is the correct shape and call up the next group of students.
Next, I will read the story, The Shape of Things by Dayle Dodds and as I read the text, we will stop and discuss the flat shapes they see making up the larger picture. Tangrams will be given to the kids to create a picture using the flat shapes. We are making a class book so each child will create their own page by drawing/writing their initial shape onto the line and then indicate their final creation on the following line.
