Writer's Workshop: Words Make Sentences
Today we are going to use the text, Flashlight, (You can see the wordless book here.) This book has pictures and no words so we are going to work together as a class to write words for each page. We will use our ABC chart and sight word chart and remember everything we learned about spacing, capitals and periods. Each page will have a sentence starter: ‘I see the_.’ The kids will work with me to stretch out the words.

We will focus on rectangles and squares in the story, Circus Shapes by Stuart Murphy. The kids will focus on the number of sides and vertices of each and help me count the them. We will look closely at rectangles and squares to focus on the fact that a square has four equal sides and a rectangle has 2 long and 2 short sides.
Next, the kids look closely at the faces of the solid shapes and notice the circle base of the cylinder, cone, and square of the cube. They will have time to explore finding the flat shapes within the solid shapes.
Lastly, the kids will lay their solid shapes flat and then trace around them. Once they lift up the solid shape, they will discover a flat shape.
