Math: Numbers 30-49
The kids will watch as I build THREE ten sticks with cubes. Do we need to count each of these ten sticks? No, we know there are 30 because we can count by 10’s...10, 20, 30! I'll lay down 6 additional cubes and ask, Now how many do I have? 30 and 6, 36! Did we have to count each cube? No! Boys and girls, we know that there are 10 cubes in our ten sticks. There is also another math tool we have used to help us with ten...a TEN frame!
The kids will use ten frames to count up to 49. Boys and girls, I need help building these numbers. Turn over a number card. I see a 4 and 2...I know the first number tells me how many TENS I need. How many do I need? Yes, four tens which means four ten frames. Lay down ten frames. I know the second number tells me how many “extras” I need. I see I need 2 extras. Lay down 2 extra cubes. We just made the number 42!The kids will watch as I build THREE ten sticks with cubes. Do we need to count each of these ten sticks? No, we know there are 30 because we can count by 10’s...10, 20, 30! I'll lay down 6 additional cubes and ask, Now how many do I have? 30 and 6, 36! Did we have to count each cube? No! First I will read, I Know Why I Brush My Teeth by Kate Rowan and discuss the importance of having a clean mouth. Next, we will become 'teeth' and stand close together to 'floss' between them with a piece of yarn. Last, the kids will sort pictures of things that are good/bad for their teeth.
