Writer's Workshop: Topics are Everywhere
We can write about things we know, do and love. Writing topics are all around us every single day. You might be inspired by anything that happens in your life or you see. I will pass around a basket which holds things like toy cars, classroom item, hat, glove, doll, etc. The kids will choose an item that sparks their writing interest. For instance, I may say something like this..."Look at this eraser. It makes me think about something that happened in the past. Do you remember learning about how it’s okay to make mistakes? I will write about that! I will write this story today, ‘I make mistaks. Mistaks are ok.’”

*We begin a new unit today.*
For these beginning lessons of the unit, students will be working on comparing sets up to number 20. To start this unit out, we will take a day to review/wrap up our work with numbers to 100 through a comparison of counted collections. Students won’t be required to state how many more/less when comparing the collections nor focus on the numbers of each. However, students will be making note of the comparisons of the collections based upon their observations. This could be something like, “Our collection has 5 plates of 10 and your collection has 7 plates of 10 so I know yours is more!” Or, students might make observations of less.
“I counted your collection...10, 20, 30... and then I counted our collection...10, 20, 30, 40, 50. I counted higher so I know ours is more!” Using the same strategy as before in Unit 8, the kids will count 10 items onto a ten frame and then transfer them onto a plate. Each pair will head off to count their collection by 10’s. After they have counted their collections, they will walk around to the other groups to compare their collection to it.
