Kindermath: Count By 5's
Kindermath: Count By 5's
We will begin the lesson by reading Lots of Ladybugs by Michael Dahl and focus on counting by 5’s. Next, the kids turn to face a partner. The first partner will put up each of their hands and count: 5, 10. Then, the second partner will put their hands up as they clap them to their partners. They’ll say, 15, 20. Altogether this should go quickly with them saying, 5, 10, 15, 20! It’s important that students know and understand that when we are counting by 5’s, we are merely skipping over given numbers to get to the final amount quickly. To help students understand, I will draw a horizontal number line with the 5, 10, 15, and 20 in an alternate color. (Kids need time to understand and process the strategies so they are able to utilize it in their lives.) For the next activity, each pair will need a baggie with 20 items and 4 blank five frames. They will work with their partner to place the items within the 5 frames until all five are filled. Then, count the 5 filled frames by 5’s.
