Writer's Workshop: Places are Stories
We are working hard on looking at writing as something that is all around us. Today we are going to take a walk around the school. We will have our clipboards and writing inspiration sheets to take with us. As we walk around, the kids will illustrate some things they would like to write about. When we return, I will say and model something like this...
“Boys and girls, what are some things you were inspired by on our walk? What types of stories could we write about? I think I will write a story about something I saw on the inspirational walk. When we were on our walk I saw the lunchroom and it reminded me of my favorite lunch. I think I will write about that today. My favorite lunch is pizza day. I think my story will say, ‘At skool I like to et pesu.’

Kindermath: Compare 'Some Extra'
The kids will be focusing on the “extras” of a teen number (15 is 10 and 5 extras/16 is 10 and 6 extras). Using the story, How Many Snails? by Paul Giganti, the kids will count the cupcakes with sprinkles and have their partner show that on their ten-frame. “We counted 13 cupcakes with sprinkles. Can you say that the 'say ten way'? Yes, ten three!” Next, they will count the cupcakes with white icing. Have the other partner show that number on their ten-frame. “How many cupcakes did we count with white icing? Yes, 14 cupcakes! Can you say that the 'say ten way'? Yes, ten four!”Now, just state the extras that are off your ten frame board. 3! 4! So, what is more: 3 or 4? Yes, 4! So, the cupcakes that were ten four or 14 is more! 14 is more than 13!” The same statements above will be repeated throughout the book for the children to show on their ten-frame.
