Writer's Workshop: Craftsmanship
The best way to explain "craftmanship" to you is to share with you what I will tell the children during the lesson:
"When we draw our stories in kindergarten, we want to be PROUD of our work. Do you think scribble drawings would make us proud? NO! We want to remember to focus on craftmanship when we are drawing. This just means we take our time and pay attention to details in our pictures. We can use craftsmanship when we remember to outline first, then color. We also can use craftsmanship by coloring slowly and trying to get rid of all the white spaces in our pictures. Another way we can use craftsmanship is to think about if our drawing needs accurate or creative colors. Accurate colors are used when we are telling a TRUE story. If you are drawing a picture of you and your grown up at the park, would you color your hair pink (unless you really did have pink hair)? NO! You would color it whatever color is on top of your head. Creative coloring is for PRETEND stories.
