Writer's Workshop: Again, using the story The Enormous Watermelon, the kids will write a review. This time they will write what character they liked least and tell why. (We did not get to this yesterday.)

Math: One thing that mathematicians do is they gather data and then learn what they can from it. The kids will have a partner and take turns spinning a spinner until they each had 5 turns and marked each turn with tally marks. After each turn they will take the shape spun and analyze the data. They will count the shapes, answer the questions, and graph the shapes. (This will make much more sense when you see the sheet they bring home today.)

Math: Today I want the kids to build their own rooms to compare 'area'. They will use 20  1" squares. They can use them however they want to build their rooms.
For instance, I may say something like this: "I think I will make room #1 with some of these squares and I will make room #2 with the rest of the squares. Let’s count each room to make sure we have 20 in all. Now I want to make 2 rooms that have the same number of squares and area, but I want their shapes to be different. Today you and your partner will build two rooms that have the same area. This means that each room will need to have the same number of squares."

 Math: Introduction to 'Area'
Another way to measure is by finding the area of something. Today, the children will find out how many tiles it will take to cover a specific area. How many more tiles will it take to fit in that same area if the tiles were smaller?

~Tomorrow is Wellness Wednesday. Have your child wear their workout gear!
