Scientists Have Tools to Help Them Measure
Teach: Today I am going to show you how to find that information in a nonfiction book. Have you ever heard of an index? An index is one feature that we can find in a nonfiction book. Do you know what you do with an index? Give kids time to share their thinking with their partners. An index is found in the back of a book and tells you what pages you can find certain information. What was one of the tools that we learned about yesterday? Yes, a ____. Let’s see if we can find it in the Index. Look here it is on page ___. Let’s turn to that page and see what the author tells us.  Some of the tools are on more than one page.

Active Engagement: Now it’s your turn. Let’s see if you can figure out what pages we can find information by using the index. Photocopy an index for each child. As you identify the various tools from yesterday, invite the children to find it on their index. So what page can we read about a _____. Yes, that’s right. Use your highlighter and highlight that page number.
Link: Remember boys and girls, today and everyday good scientists know we have many tools. We can read about those tools in nonfiction books and use an index to help us find the tools we want to learn about.

Scientists Have Tools to Help Them Measure

Connect: Remember yesterday when we said that a scientist makes a conclusion? Teach: Today I am going to show you some tools that a scientist might use to help them collect data. Sometimes a scientist needs to measure things in their experiment so that they can compare two items. For example, if they want to compare how much two things weigh, they might use a scale. Display all of the tool clip art pictures. Say, Let’s see if we can match the words with the pictures. Show each name and work together to match the names to the correct tools.
Active Engagement: Now it’s your turn. You are going to be a scientist! Now, let’s play a game. I am going to read you an experiment, you tell me which tool you think the scientist should use. Read each of the experiment cards.
Link: Remember boys and girls, today and everyday good scientists know we have many tools. Some of the tools help the scientist to collect data by measuring.
