Scientists Observe and Collect Data
Connect: Remember yesterday when we said that after a scientist thinks about the answer to his question and makes a hypothesis, he conducts his experiment?
Teach: Today I am going to show you how scientists observe and collect data from their experiment. Let me show you what I mean. Here is my gummy bear experiment that I conducted yesterday. I can use one of my 5 senses to collect data—sight! I can look at each gummy bear and observe exactly what happened. Now, on my recording page I can draw a picture to record my data. I can look at a gummy bear that we didn’t put in a liquid and compare to see if they look differently or if they look the same. Here you will model actually drawing the gummy bears onto your paper. Refer to an actual gummy bear for the standard.
Active Engagement: Now it’s your turn. You are going to be a scientist! I want you to observe what each teddy bear looks like. Turn over you recording page. Now on this side, we are going to draw what we observed.
Link: Remember boys and girls, today and everyday good scientists know we always observe and collect data. Today we used one of our 5 Senses-Sight.
Application: Give each child the 5 senses cut and paste sort. Have children identify how each child is collecting data. Are they feeling, looking, tasting, hearing, or smelling to collect data?
