New Concept: Today I want to show you something a little different. I am going to spin my spinner and pull out the cards to match my spin. My spinner landed on 1 ten and 4 ones. So I will take my 10 card and my 4 card. Then I will build these numbers with my beads. Now watch what happens when I slide the 4 over the 0. What number did I get? 14! Does that match the number of beads I counted out? Let’s count them to be sure.
Whole Group Explore: The children will practice building teen numbers using the spinner, beads, and number cards.
Student Application: Students will work independently on creating teen numbers on paper.

Science: What Makes a Shadow?
Teach: Today, I am going to show you how the sun can make a shadow. Let me show you what I mean. I am a scientist, and I have a question: Does everything have a shadow? I think some things have a shadow and some things do not have a shadow. Show them the experiment card. I have a glass made out of glass. I am going to shine my flashlight onto the glass and see if it will make a shadow on the wall. I can see a shadow of the outline of the glass, but not the inside, just the edge!
Active Engagement: Now it’s your turn. You are going to be a scientist! I want you to use a magnifying glass, a book bag and a water bottle to see if you can see a shadow. As you are doing your experiment, remember that you have to observe and collect your data.
Link: Remember boys and girls, today and everyday, good scientists know that the sun, like our flashlights can shine on things. Some things will make a shadow and some things will not make a shadow.
