Daily 5!
Math: Composing Numbers
New Concept: Yesterday we had a fun time playing “Pass the beans.” Our egg carton is just like a 10-frame, we use it because it helps us organize our materials. Dump a bag of materials out in a pile, then ask the students if they can tell how many there are. Put the items in the egg carton (filling up 10), then lay the remaining in a 10-frame configuration.
Whole Group Explore: Today, we are going to play “Pass the beans” like we did yesterday, but we will have more items in our bags. You will do like I did with my pennies. Fill the carton, then lay the others by it to see how many you have. Each pair of students start with an empty egg carton and a bag of manipulatives. The kids will place the manipulatives in the egg carton slots as they count. Then the teacher will give the signal, “Pass the beans” and the bag of manipulatives will rotate in a clockwise direction.
As students are exploring, notice which students need to count the items in the carton vs. the students who started with 10 and counted on.
How did the egg carton help you?
Student Application: Students will work independently on 10 and ____ make ___.
