Letter Study: Oo
 Popcorn Word: he
Language Arts: Identifying the sequence of events in a text and looking for more signal words.
Phonological Awareness: Segment Initial Sounds: A puppet named Choppy will chop off the first sound of a word (h-orse) for the kids to respond (horse) and then use it in a sentence...A cowboy rides a horse. Choppy will continue using other words...
Produce Rhyme:
I roll a ball to someone, that person says a word that rhymes with my word. As a class, we decide if the response is a real or nonsense word.

This is the same lesson as yesterday...
Math: Zero the Hero visits today! It's Day 40!

Academic Halloween Party Activities
~Halloween Phonics Bingo
~Lace-a-Pumpkin: Fine motor activity
~Draw-a-Rhyme: Spooky Monster
~Roll-A-Pumpkin...roll a dot cube and color the corresponding number on a pumpkin shape
**The children will assist in making our Ghoulicious snack and participate in some silly songs and spooky stories!**

Language Arts: More work on identifying sequence of events in a text and noticing 'signal' words to determine text importance. I am sending a copy of the poster we will use today called "My Tomato Plant" home. Your job is to read through the poster with your child and highlight the 'signal' words. (first, next, then, now) Return tomorrow for a sticker! Reinforcing these concepts is critical!
A storybook reader is scheduled for 10:10 to read Haunted House, Haunted Mouse.

Computer class today!

DAILY 5: We have started "Book Club" (Guided Reading) during DAILY 5. While the kids are engaged in literacy activities, I pull groups of 2-3 kids to facilitate reading. It's important to know that you should keep the book for two nights for your child to read each night!

Math: IPads
~Each Wednesday we will be taking a turn using the Ipad cart we share among the elementary school. The apps used will focus on skills and concepts related to outcomes we are working on. Two children per Ipad gives them plenty of hands-on experience!

Smart Room: Oh, the excitement that will appear when the kids see the new stations that promote fine and large motor skills! Pictures to come...

~Be sure to send in your "Ghoulicious" snack item here for the party.
~The kids will be changing into costume around 12:45 tomorrow.

Tuesday, October 29

Tuesday, October 29
Letter Study: Nn
 Popcorn Word: do
Phonological Awareness: Sound Discrimination: Two students with names that begin with different letters, will come to the front of the room while we stretch out the beginning sound of their name. We say a chant that goes like this:
Sue and Paul are our friends.
Say their names with me.
/s/ /s/ Sue, /p/ /p/ Paul.

One starts with /s/.
I wonder who it can be?

We continue this until all kids have a turn.
Segment Words by Syllables:
Using a poem about bunnies, we will clap the
multi-syllabic words throughout

Handwriting: N (Big line down, frog-jump back to the top, big line down and back up.)
Writer's Workshop: The kids will be introduced to their 'Writer's Journal' today. It's a notebook that we will use to put our words, letters, numbers, phrases, or sentences into.

DAILY 5: Is your child practicing their word list every day? Some lists are starting to come in and the children are getting excited about learning their words!

Math: Comparing Names
The kids built their name towers yesterday with connecting cubes. Today, they will compare their own name to each of their friends' names to see if it is longer, shorter, or the same. Their work focuses on:
~Developing language for comparing lengths (Long, longer than, short, shorter than, the same, equal to.)

Smart Room: Today is the last day for our October theme. I will be posting pictures and descriptions of the stations to come.
~Have you heard about the Locker Fairy yet? Each day she hangs around the lockers in search of a clean and tidy locker. If she finds one, she leaves a prize and a note!

* Remember to send in your part of our Fall Party treat.  A list was sent home in your child's Wednesday Envelope with one circled item for you to contribute.

Monday, October 28
Letter Study: Nn
 Popcorn Word: do
Phonological Awareness: Segment Initial Sounds: The children identify the beginning sounds of objects placed in a bag. We will give clues to help the kids guess what the item is. For instance, this is something you find on the ground. Students should answer by segmenting the initial sound. (r-ock)
Oral Rhyme Recognition:
Out of a series of three words, the children identify the two that rhyme.
Language Arts: Identifying the sequence of events in pictures and text. We will cue in on 'signal' words such as: first, next, then, last.

DAILY 5: Is your child practicing their word list every day? Some lists are starting to come in and the children are getting excited about learning their words!

Math: Letters in our Names
To introduce this lesson, we read a story about a very long name: Chrysanthemum  by: Kevin Henkes
The kids will be making their own name tower with connecting cubes to be used for tomorrow's lesson. Their work focuses on:
~Developing strategies for accurately counting and keeping track of quantities up to 12.

Music Today!

Smart Room: Have your child draw some spiderwebs at home for you tonight like we do in the Smart Room. Bring it to school tomorrow and show Mrs. Tongen for a sticker!
